Why Join a Sports Club in East London?

East London is one of the most vibrant, diverse, and active parts of the UK.

With the legacy of the 2012 Olympics still alive in the borough of Newham, there has never been a better time to get active and connect with your local community.

Joining a sports club isn't just about fitness. Research consistently shows that regular team sport reduces stress, builds lasting friendships, and improves mental wellbeing. At ELCSA, that's exactly what's on offer — alongside some genuinely excellent facilities.

Sports Clubs at ELCSA Memorial Park

ELCSA is home to a wide range of clubs catering for all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. Here's what's available:

Rugby

East London RFC has called Memorial Park home for decades. Whether you're looking for men's rugby, women's rugby, or youth development, the club offers a welcoming environment for all. ELCSA also hosts university rugby teams and has been a base for inclusive rugby, including links to the Kings Cross Steelers — the world's first all-inclusive rugby club.

Football

Memorial Park has deep footballing roots. This was the very ground where Thames Ironworks FC — the club that became West Ham United — played in the late 1890s. Today, the park hosts several grassroots football clubs including pro-star academies and Latin leagues, with a top-quality 3G Astro pitch opened by Sir Trevor Brooking and funded by the Football Foundation.

Ultimate Frisbee

ELCSA is one of the few community sports venues in London to offer Ultimate Frisbee. The Great Britain Frisbee Team and London Hornets have both used the facilities. It's fast, fun, and a fantastic full-body workout — and a great option if traditional team sports aren't your thing.

Weightlifting, Strongman, Powerlifting

For those looking to train with purpose, weightlifting facilities are available at the park. Ideal for athletes supplementing their sport or anyone looking to build strength in a structured environment.

A Historic Ground With a Modern Mission

Memorial Park is steeped in history.

The grounds were originally built in 1897 for Thames Ironworks FC — the predecessor of West Ham United — and have been a hub of East London sporting life ever since. Today, ELCSA manages the park on behalf of the London Borough of Newham, maintaining that community-first spirit while delivering modern, inclusive facilities.

Who Are the Clubs For?

Everyone. That's the short answer.

ELCSA's clubs serve men's and women's sport, youth development, university teams (including UEL, City University, Queen Mary's, Barts, and HULT), and recreational players just looking for a regular game. Several clubs also cater specifically for inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly sport.

If you're new to East London, recently moved to Newham, or simply want to get more active in 2025, Memorial Park is one of the easiest places to start.
